Talulah Does The Hula plus Disconnect 4

State.ie Presents….

Borne of a mutual love of the tropics, pop music, harmonies, bouffants, sex, sunshine, outdoor drinking and Phil Spector, Talulah does the Hula has come together as a sprightly quintet whose goal it is to get your foot tapping and bootie wiggling. Comprised of Lauren, Jessie, Caoimha, Paula and Mike, Talulah Does The Hula is possibly the only band ever to be named after a New Zealand court case. It could have gone either way though, they were *this* close to being called ‘Number 16 Bus Shelter’.

4/5 of the band cut their teeth in influential Dublin bands The Chalets and Neosupervital. After the demise of those bands, they were eager to rip it up and start again, with the quirky habit of sharing duties on vocals, guitar, bass and keyboards, and enlisting a seriously talented drummer. Influences range from the reverberated 60s sounds of Phil Spector and the Shangri-Las, the five part harmonies of the Beach Boys and a healthy dose of layered synths and jangly guitars like a mix of The Cars and The Ramones with a good dollop of the B52s on top. Songs vary from the incredibly catchy tale of best mate love, to the electro-soaked heartbreak inducing dance tune, to the classic pop song that morphs into a heavy hitting, loud and hugely climactic set closer.

2008 was a hectic year for Galway 4-piece Disconnect 4. They’ve gigged the length & breadth of the country, recorded a live 2fm session with Dan Hegarty, a session with Muzu.tv and have an appearance on TG4 under their belts, not to mention being selected for the Best of Myspace Podcast (which is among the top 100 podcasts on iTunes) and Unsigned Band of the Month on British music network site CMU in November. They’ve headlined Green & Live in Limerick and the Galway date of the IMRO tour as well as Metro in Waterford, played Strange Brew 300, The Summer Shindig and New Year’s Eve in the Róisín Dubh, and been a part of Psychotic Reaction in Crawdaddy and the Bud Rising festival. Jim Carroll of the Irish Times says ‘If your looking for an act that understands the co-relation between classic pop and cutting-edge indie, you’ve come to the right place’. And he should know.

Plus State DJs till late…
