Trail blazer, creative revolutionary, electronica pioneer, world music punk. Jah Wobble makes a welcome return to Ireland with his new project, The Nippon Dub Ensemble, a revelatory fusion of traditional Japanese vocals and instrumentation with his trademark heavy dub bass.

The English musician, bassist, singer, and world beat legend has, since his time in John Lydon’s post-Sex Pistols group Public Image Ltd (PiL), worked with artists from Björk to Primal Scream, in genres from ambient to traditional folk, releasing thirty solo and collaborative albums.

Over the years, he has clocked up a full passport of sound, creating incredible aural journeys through dub, world, ambient and avant-rock music with his dark, textural soundscapes. Jah’s previous project, the Chinese Dub Orchestra, won the ‘Cross-Cultural Collaboration’ category in the inaugural Songlines Music Awards, opening this East-West fusion to further critical and popular acclaim. He now turns his focus to Japan, featuring himself alongside Joji Hirota, Keiko Kitamura, Mark Sanders, Oki and Clive Bell as the Nippon Dub Ensemble. For the Festival the musicians will perform to an ikebana floral backdrop created in situ by Takashi Sawano.

World Music Central lauded the recently released Japanese Dub album as “a fascinating electro-acoustic adventure.” In it, Wobble seeks to reduce Japanese sound to its essence while fusing it with rhythmic groovy dance music. This exclusive Irish performance by one of world music’s most intelligently eclectic mavericks is guaranteed to blow the roof off.

Turn up the heat! It’s a night of sweaty, jungle-inspired retro voodoo funk as legendary Benin sensations Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou make their scorching Irish debut. This eleven-piece ensemble has hypnotised audiences for decades with their unstoppable homemade West African madness. Formed in 1969, and still featuring four of the original line-up, the Orchestre recently signed to legendary Frankfurt label Analogue and since then it’s been one sell-out performance after another, including a much acclaimed 2009 Barbican concert.

Benin is the birthplace of vodoun (voodoo) – a religion practiced to music – and its complex rhythms are hailed as the sonic bridge with the Americas that ultimately influenced blues, jazz, Cuban and Brazilian music. Beating out Sato rhythms on a colossal vertical drum, and offering the Sakpata beat to the voodoo divinity for health; the collective meld traditional percussive tempos with out-of-this-world organ harmonies, big brass sound and psychedelic guitar riffs.

As the New York Times said: “The funk turns into hypnosis and the rest is unstoppable dance music.” Mix it up and get down, for a night of sizzling beats and spiritual soul.

Graced with soul, funk and spirituality, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble has captivated audiences worldwide with their undeniable drive of hip-hop, tight brass, melodic R&B and rock ‘n’ roll spirit.

All the sons of Sun Ra trumpeter Phil Cohran, this group of eight brothers began performing together from an early age. Destined for a lifetime of music playing, having practiced for several hours each morning before school, they soon became a central part of their father’s Youth Ensemble. With exposure to a generation of American musical heavyweights from NWA and Public Enemy to Ice Cube and Eazy-E, a parallel passion soon emerged. By the end of the nineties, with everyone out of school, they drew upon their extraordinary musicianship; their jazz roots and their thriving hip hop sensibility, to make a living busking on the streets of Chicago.

In 1999, they formed what is now known as the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and have performed and collaborated all over the world with some of today’s elite artists, from Mos Def to Maxwell and Wu Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah to UK superstar Damon Albarn. Paranoid Visions / Dubtones / 3 For The Morgue

Formed in 1981, Paranoid Visions quickly allied themselves to the anarcho punk fraternity of the second wave of punk rock in the early 80’s. Heavily influenced by the crass ethic of diy music, the band fomed their own F.O.A.D label and licenced their records to all the madmen records, home of the Mob, Thatcher on Acid, Blyth Power and the Astronauts. Paranoid Visons played gigs and toured with the likes of Poison Girls, DIRT, Blyth Power, the Subhumans and the Instigators. Throughout the 90’s Paranoid Visions became the biggest punk band Ireland had ever produced, featuring on several TV shows, newspapers and being offered numerous record deals from major labels (all of which were ignored). In the early 90’s the band played with bands like snuff, the macc ladds and manic street preachers before calling it a day in 1992. In 1996 they reformed to play support on some dates for the sex pistols filthy lucre tour. In 2001 they reformed again and played with the damned, the dickies and at the wasted festival in morecombe. While these reunions were always designed to be short lived, the 2005 reunion line up formed in support of the re release of the back catalogue (outside in (the vinyl years 1986 – 1989)) has decided to continue on its merry way. Late in 2005, the band remastered and released their long lost (and quite funny) xmas album “bollox to Xmas”. a live album called “live in stab city” was released in April 2006. A new album, “40 shades of gangreen” was released in March 2007, the first new material in 16 years. 2008 was a busy year with the release of “the treasure from the wasteland e.p” (12″, CD and download), which charted at number 4 in tn Irish download charts. The release of “beware of the god” in 2009 heralded some great reviews and even better sales generating a number 3 chart placing for the track “fritzl’s basement” and a number 5 chart placing for the 3 track download “1970sick ep (i am the one / don’t dictate / stepping stone)”

The Angelus are a hard-playing Dublin six-piece whose live shows are a wall of infectious noise and well-wrought tunes. Featuring duelling guitars, violin, bass, drums, and whiskey-strained vocals, their sound is hard to pigeonhole, filtering elements of blues, folk, and good ol’ rock and roll to craft their own inimitable sound. Following a lengthy hiatus, this show marks the band’s return to live performance, and just in time for Christmas too. Also playing on the night we have Homebrew and the Bad Examples, Dublin’s finest country/rockabilly practitioners (RIP Homebrew) and Hugh Dean Taggart with his high and lonesome bluegrass sound. Get into it!

Colm Lynch has a distinctive style when it comes to playing live. He’s happily aggressive with the guitar, if there could be such a paradox. His live show consists of an eight-piece band and the energy of a small ESB station. His music is rock with a hint of blues and folk. His style is upbeat and his attitude seems to be contagiously reflected in the group he plays with. “This group of musicians have been with me for about 2 years, they seem to understand me inside out. From the very first day they just picked up on the vibe and then of course they lend their own personal gift to it. They’re all heavily invested in it. It feels more like a group thing, than just me now.”

2007 has been the most successful year to date for the band. They began the year with a Balcony TV nomination for best band and continued swiftly with the release of Rocket Ship to critical acclaim. Subsequently this high octane song was included on the soundtracks for two surfing documentaries over the summer and a video for the song will be out in January 2008. The band have also had a further two tracks used on large TV advertising campaigns – exposing them to a wider audience.

With 60+ gigs under their belt this year already, Red Kid’s live shows have been described as “legendary” and “effortlessly swinging from rock to pop to punk”. “No Reason”, the bands second single from their debut album “Rocket Ship” is due for release in January. Recorded in the legendary Pulse recording studios, which has previously occupied artists such as Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Brian Adams and Bon Jovi. “Rocket Ship” comes from a collective love of The Beatles, The Strokes, The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads and The Velvet Underground to name but a few.

One of the famous names from the Purty Loft’s history, The Galloping Hogans were a mainstay of the venue during the late eighties. The three Hogan brothers in the band – Brian, Lance and Larry – all went on to have glittering careers in music, with the former two still part of Irish pioneers Kila.
